Negotiations are ongoing after the decision was approved by joint owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The Premier League giants Manchester United are submitting an initial two-year contract offer to Michael Carrick as the team's head coach, and this offer also comes with a special option. This optional project is to extend the contract by another season until 2029.
Negotiations are now underway after joint boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe opened the license, with the executive committee meeting this week and chief executive Omar Berada.
Berada and director of football Jason Wilcox proposed during the meeting that Carrick become the official manager. Negotiations will continue to proceed. Although there are many details to be sorted out, there is still the possibility of reaching an agreement before Manchester United's final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. This would allow Carrick to finish the season at Old Trafford with a clear identity and give fans assurances about who will sit on the bench next season.
It is Carrick's support team who are expected to stay. Assistant coach Steve Holland, who is seen as playing a key role, is expected to receive a new contract. Coach Jonathan Woodgate is also expected to get a new contract. Coach Jonny Evans is also expected to get a new contract. Travis Binnion is also likely to get a new contract. Craig Mawson, who was promoted from a deputy position to first-team goalkeeping coach following the departure of Ruben Amorim, is expected to continue in this senior role.
Manchester United will seek to add personnel to the team, and the search for a set-piece coach has been put on the agenda. It is estimated that Andreas Jorgesson, who is very popular at Manchester United in the 2024-2025 season, may be a candidate to return. Jorgerson is currently at Tottenham Hotspur, having joined Thomas Frank's coaching staff last summer and has remained there ever since.
Carrick was at Manchester City's Joie Stadium on Thursday night, along with Berada and Wilcox, who watched Manchester United's under-18s lose 2-1 to their local rivals in the FA Youth Cup final.
As expected, Ratcliffe approved the decision of Manchester United football executives to select Carrick as the team's long-term head coach. This is good news. Since January this year, he has obtained this opportunity through his work on and off the field, and his short coaching experience in 2021 is also valuable. He has stabilized Manchester United's position twice during turbulent stages.
The question now is whether he can turn Manchester United into a title contender, but no one knows the answer at the moment. This is because his only managerial experience before this was at Middlesbrough.
Manchester United considered other options and conducted a proper review. In another situation, if it were not during the World Cup, or if Luis Enrique could be successfully invited, they might choose to hire a coach from outside.
This is one of the factors in the ongoing negotiations. The initial two-year contract is shorter than what most clubs are willing to offer, but it is similar to the contract Amorim signed in November 2024 until 2027.
Amorim's contract contained an option for an extra year, although that option was never considered for activation. If a deal for Carrick is done and he is successful, United will be happy to activate this option. This would keep his contract on the same length as Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola, who have just signed three-year contracts.
Carrick's coaching staff have been a huge help to him so far, so it behooves them to stay with him if they like. Holland, in particular, is seen as having a major influence.
The idea of adding a set-piece coach shows that evolution is also part of the plan, and part of the plan includes evolution.
